It was interesting There was a lot I didn t like about the Christianity part mostly the doubt he attributed to some events he seemed less scrutinizing about events relating to the other 3 I did really like the historical context around the time of Jesus there were a lot of things I hadn t thought of before.I really like the discussion on Confucius, Buddha, and especially Muhammad It was a great overview.
I enjoyed it Instead of trying to give an overview of the different religions, it went back and took a look at the culture that influenced them and, as much as possible what their lives and teaching may have been from the sources available If you re looking for comparative religion, this isn t it Instead it s an overview of who these influential people were and what they taught.
Although I didn t achieve my objective, I learned a great deal I finally can remember the difference between Shia and Sunni Muslims These 18 hours of listening made the time bearable on the treadmill Sure beats the numbing effect of television.
The instructor did a very nice job of balancing the four sages with historical fact where it existed speculation so identified and their teachings contrasting each The teacher, except the last lecture which he was clear was his views , intricately balanced the original teachers, the teachings of followers thereafter, and how they differed based upon the time period in which the sage originated The amount of material presented necessitated one lecture per sitting or be overwhelmed with too much.
This was an excellent overview of these four great teachers and sages I knew a great deal about Jesus and Muhummad, and was grateful to have such a thorough, thoughtful, and unbiased overview of them alongside Confucius and Buddha Over all, I thought it was an exceptional learning experience for an audiobook My commute to work has never been productive and worthwhile
This was a lecture series in the The Great Courses collection and was quite an undertaking I learned quite a lot about these four influencers, shedding light on the historical processes that underlie their phenomenal, enduring impact on world civilization.
Very respectfully handled comparison on the history and teachings of all four I could see fundamentalists having issues with the course I respected how Professor Muesse shared how each one has impacted his life.Highly recommended, I will be seeking out other courses by this professor.
The lectures of Muesse PhD are incredibly insightful and full of historical and theological depth I highly recommend for anyone who enjoys thinking about ethics and aspects of the metaphysical.
The Great Courses lives up to its name again.
Great introduction to these sages
The fundamental problem with the lecture series is the topic to understand four disparate sages from vastly different eras, geographies, teachings and lives The common thread is their influence on the humanity, of course As good as the individual sessions on each one of them are, the compares and contrasts are wholly inadequate. The facts of the four greats are interesting Almost everyone is likely to walk out with new knowledge about their lives Their teachings are handled with extreme political [...]
Informative, although I would say mostly as an introduction to world religions I wouldn t want people to think that the Christianity he describes is the one I believe in, so I have to be a bit cautious about accepting at face value how he describes the beliefs of other religions Still, a good introduction.
This is a great book, going in depth about each of the great sages and then examining how their teachings have similar traits and the different teachings of each The author does a great job of giving us the cultural influence of the sages and how each religion has evolved.
I listened to this book on tape I really enjoyed it He tells the background and belief of each of the sages There were many things about Jesus I didn t know He put the historical background into play and says how time has embellished many concepts Interesting.
Over 18 hours, Professor Muesse discusses the historical lives of Confucius, Buddha, Jesus and Muhammad in a way that makes them relatable and, ultimately human to show that in fact, they aren t as far apart as we may believe A wonderful experience, highly recommended.
Amazing lecture series Must read for anyone who ever interacted with other humans.
