Despite this having like the GORGEOUS COVER OF EVER It didn t really work for me at all I m not even gonna lie, it was super slow, and the plot was really hard to believe And I also felt it was trying extremely hard to be The New Hunger Games because why have ONE when you can have MOOOOORE Note we don t need omg So it s a dystopian set in a world that has 0% world building.Because why would we need world building haha Don t be ridiculous Basically society is devided into The Pures vs The Dregs [...]
This cover is simply gorgeous It kind of reminds me of the movie haven t watched it yet The Greatest Showman.
Some parts I loved, other parts I didn t Overall a very enjoyable if that s the right word read Will elaborate soon
I m incredibly uncomfortable with the narrative and can t continue The concept sounded wonderful but a society racially segregated by those pure of blood and those who are immigrants from diverse backgrounds makes me incredibly uneasy The latter are referred to as being a blight on society, kept as disposable servants with the intention to eradicate them from society After an act of gallantry, I m assuming Benedict, the male protagonist who is pure of blood will be the white saviour I have no do [...]
3 sterren of 3.5 sterren Dit was me wel een achtbaan zeg hoor, het begin vond ik vreselijk, het einde heel tof Net een voldoende dus, met potentie voor het eventuele vervolg
dnf at 25%, the insta love and the writing was just not at my liking
This is one of the most fast paced books I ve ever read Hayley Barker s debut started at an absolute break neck pace and never once slowed down This, combined with the short chapters, made for an incredibly fast read There were even moments where I was so caught up in the action that I found myself holding my breath Barker writes very well from two different perspectives and I never once got confused about who was speaking, even with the story moving so rapidly This book is a refreshing and orig [...]

Reviewed at queenofteenfiction Show Stopper is told from the POV of both Ben and Hoshiko, two very different characters in a dystopian world where people are split into Pures and Dregs The Pures consist of those who are considered Pure English whilst the Dregs are immigrants Ben is a Pure, privileged from birth and living better off than most due to his mother s high position in the government Hoshi is a Dreg who was taken away from her family in the slums and made to perform in the circus, a de [...]
3.5 starsMild Spoilers ahead. This is undoubtedly a very good debut with a cover to die for No, I mean it that cover is what all publishers should aspire to when it comes to cover art Frankly it was since the cover for VE Schawb s Vicious was released that I didn t gasp in awe of the art.The book is good, it presents a dystopian Britain in which ethnic minorities are segregated and oppressed in the most brutal of manners In this the novel conveys very current worries with the state of a nation ra [...]
Over 100 years from now, society is separated into two groups the Pures and the Dregs The Dregs were created following animosity towards minority and ethnic groups, and now they re the lowest of the low living in slums and for some, forced to perform in the Cirque in which no one survives very long When Ben, a Pure, visits the Cirque and is instantly dazzled by trapeze artist Hoshiko, he is suddenly seeing clearly for the first time and realises the injustices in the world. This was a really grea [...]
Welcome to the deadliest show on Earth In a near future UK, where society is split in two, Ben is the son of a government minister and Hoshiko is a tightrope walker in the circus where performers are forced to perform dangerous, often fatal, acts for entertainment Weaving together two sides of the story, we see what horrors the circus has on offer as Ben comes to understand what s really happening around him.A dark, dystopian read, told in short chapters that kept the pace racing forward and on [...]
When I started this, I was really enjoying it It is HEAVY on the circus setting, which is my favorite But then it became this crazy dystopian and I m kinda over that genre Also there are way too many spelling errors in this book.
Review originally posted on The Bibliophile ChroniclesThis book caught my eye when I heard people talking about it on Twitter The premise combined with the gorgeous cover art really sucked me in and I was really desperate to read it Even though I d read the description and a few blogger reviews, this book was still completely unlike what I thought it would be It s a dark and brutal story about a future England in which pure English people are the ruling elite, and everyone not completely English [...]
I have a soft spot for any book that takes place in a circus or carnival There is something so lovely and magical about that setting that I just can t resist However, turns out that alone can not save a book I probably could have dealt with the insta love after a couple hundred eyerolls I say probably because this is one of the most instant, most unbelievable and most ridiculous love storylines I ve ever read in my life Twilight is a masterpiece portrait of human relationships in front of this b [...]
4.5 stars Show Stopper by Hayley Barker was a really unique and original read I whizzed through it pretty quickly because it was gripping and fast flowing and hard to put down There were two things that I particularly enjoyed about the book The first was that the author has chosen to base the concept for the story on the divide which is apparent in today s society between natural born citizens and immigrants The twist on this, is that she has depicted a near future society where immigrants have [...]
I have just finished this book and sugar honey ice tea, that was dramatic My heart is still pounding from reading the last few chapters of this book That was such a fast read, but the amount of detail the action that goes into this book doesn t feel sloppy or half hearted The details in this book and how the events are descriped are brilliant Don t get me wrong there were certain parts in this book that I just couldn t bring myself to read because they were so detailed and I could imagine them s [...]
Wow what a read, I m hooked and can t wait for the sequel. The characters feel real from chapter 1, and the story keeps you guessing throughout. The tense scenes were written particularly well. This is certainly a binge book with the story keeping you gripped and keep turning the pages way past the hour you were meant to be going to sleep
Originally posted on laurapatriciarose 20Show Stopper was a book that I heard about way back in January I was really intrigued to where the story would go and what the relevance of the circus was This is set in a near future England where the poorest people must watch their children be taken by a travelling circus and not just any circus, a deadly one These people are known as the Dregs literally the dregs of society, whereas the ruling class are know as the Pures, pure and white and good Ben is [...]
Originally posted at iliveforreading Before I got around to reading it, I thought Show Stopper sounded quite a bit like The Hunger Games They both have the same idea of the rich upper class watching the bloody sport and torment of the lower classes for entertainment I couldn t wait to get to this one for that reason, as well as the fact that the tagline the deadliest show on earth sounds so ominous, so I knew I was in for a high stakes read My goodness, this one was PHENOMENAL The plot was fast [...]
This book was so action packed I was on the edge of my seat the entire time I was reading It s the kind of book I can imagine being a really gripping thriller film, the sort that has you peeking through your fingers whilst you watch I particularly enjoyed Hoshiko s performance scenes they were very well written, and got even intense throughout the book Also, Show Stopper was super gory something I was not expecting in the slightest And although gore isn t usually my thing, I found that it simpl [...]
I reallllly wanted to love this book, but I couldn t I tried, but it just didn t work out This concept sounded so awesome and it is, but the execution wasn t so great I mean, a crazy circus, an evil ringmaster, sabotage Well, it promised all that, and those elements were there, but it didn t really make me feel anything The main character, Hoshi, had a potentially great backstory, but sadly,we didn t get any, not even a paragraph Ben was just bland The only character that I liked was killed off A [...]
This book caught my attention when it was advertised as The Hunger Games meets The Night Circus and it did hold a lot of similarities but also managed to stand on its own two feet.I was hooked on every chapter and was ready to fight along side the characters to put the world to rights. If you like YA novels with a strong message and the building bricks of revolution, then get Reading Show Stopper now
A seriously good read, couldn t put this book down I think Barker is going to be a recognisable name in the future, can t wait for the next book And hoping that the perils and dark suspense of the circus gets translated onto the big screen soon
I can t wait for the sequel I loved this book so much, it was fast paced and gripping.
An amazing book, which captures you from the very beginning Although predominately a YA book, this will appeal to grown ups alike and has some political themes running through it which are very topical at this current time If you like Harry Potter, you ll love this
